Volunteering at the Museum

The O. Winston Link Museum is entering its fourth year of operation. During that time we have had the honor of working with a range of volunteers. We welcome those who help with one time events, those who work on a monthly schedule, and even more those who work one day a week. Though many of our volunteers have different backgrounds and areas of interest, they all work towards one thing: making every patron's visit to the O. Winston Link Museum the best it can possibly be. The dedication and devotion they all express through their service is simply astounding, and appreciated every day.

The Link volunteer corps is a strong and fun cadre of people, each with unique skills and assets. Through giving time and knowledge, they expand our collective knowledge evermore. In addition, our volunteers form a sense of community from which they and the Museum benefit. If you are interested in becoming a part of this dynamic and dedicated group, please take the time to review the following information.

There are a variety of ways in which volunteers help the O. Winston Link Museum. Our volunteer staff helps run admissions and the gift shop sales, and participates in Museum events and tours. We have opportunities available for anyone interested in helping out at this dynamic and historic site. Extensive training is provided for new volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering with the O. Winston Link Museum or have questions about our volunteer program, please contact Leah Sineno at (540) 982-5465 or at education@linkmuseum.org.

O. Winston Link Museum Volunteer Positions

Descriptions of Positions

  • Admissions Desk- Consists of working with a cash register (money, checks, credit card machine), answering the telephone, greeting visitors, orienting visitors to the Museum, and passing out brochures. Admissions volunteers will also aid with any administrative needs that arise (envelope stuffing, file organization). This position is our first impression to visitors.
  • Gift Shop- This position involves using a cash register (money, checks, credit card machine), labeling merchandise, taking inventory and/or setting up displays, answering the Gift Shop telephone and taking shop orders via telephone.
  • Archives- The Archives volunteers primarily work with collections management to maintain and implement our inventory systems and update records. Some projects include archival organization, exchanging of prints throughout the galleries, exhibit set-up, etc. In addition, volunteers are needed to clean and re-house several large collections of negatives relevant to the history of Roanoke.
  • Guided Tours- Docents will be scheduled when group tours are arranged. While this is primarily a self-guided Museum, groups do request guided tours on occasion. This volunteer is vital to creating a memorable and enjoyable experience while passing along information.
  • Site Rental Staffing- These volunteers assist staff with the operations of site rental and special events by walking the galleries, answering questions, and operating the Museum Shop during events.
